The Oily Girl’s Guide to Summer

Diamonds, the Empire State Building, Lil Wayne’s teeth… some things are meant to shine. Your t-zone, however, is not. For many, humidity and rising temperatures invite unwanted greasy skin. But like Charlie, sheen can be regulated with great success. Here’s how to battle oil slicks during the hottest months:

1 – Wash your face with an oil-free cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Face Wash is a perennial favorite that always gets the job done.

2 – Using a small cotton pad, swipe your face with a balancing toner. Try Avalon Organics’ Vitamin C Balancing Toner.  Avoid astringents as they are loaded with alcohol that can encourage glands to produce more oil.

3 – Rub a mattifying lotion with SPF onto your face and neck. Mattifying lotions absorb oil and help keep shine at bay. Lotions with SPF reduce sun exposure, another key factor in oil production. Try Murad’s Oil-Control Mattifier with SPF 15  or Dermalogica’s Oil Free Matte for oil-controlling hydration.

4 – Buff a powder foundation onto the t-zone area and chin. Use a lighter hand to apply foundation to cheeks and the outline of your face. Bare Escentuals carries mattifying foundations in a wide color range.

5 – Finish with a translucent powder. Make Up For Ever has an ultra light powder that feels great on skin.

6 – Be sure to carry blotting papers throughout the day. Shiseido makes luxurious papers that are packed with a tiny bit of powder. Clean & Clear carries a much more affordable version that delivers similar results. In a pinch, napkins made from recycled material and toilet seat covers provide surprisingly amazing blotting action.
