5 Ways to Clear Up Your Skin (Without Skincare Products)

What good is an all-star lineup of skincare when you sabotage your face with acne triggers? I have five solutions to great skin, minus the heavy skincare arsenal.

1.  CLEAN…

…your makeup and cleansing brushes, and your sheets…

…because they harbor dirt, oil, and bacteria—the holy trinity of acne. Wash brushes with dish soap. Never soak them (which weakens the glue holding the hairs and handle together), and always lay brushes flat to dry on a towel. Do this 2 to 3 times a month. I treat cleansing brushes (like the Clarisonic) with a hydrogen peroxide rinse, followed by a soapy wash.

As for bed sheets, wash those weekly, and if you can, avoid fabric softener sheets, which can leave a wax residue that clogs pores.

2.  SWAP…

…washcloths with paper towels…

…since washcloths are mini sheets of bacteria and dirt. Bacteria love wet, porous surfaces, so as soon as a washcloth meets water, an epic breeding ground of microscopic proportions ensues. You won’t lose any points if you wash with just your fingers and then dry with a paper towel. If you miss the exfoliating effect of the washcloth, take comfort in a scrub with gentle beads (like AcneFree Gentle Acne Scrub).

3.  TAKE…

…cod liver oil…

…the essential ingredient for clear skin. It works, which means a lot coming from me, because I don’t take much stock in any other beauty from the inside white noise. I’ve written much more about this incredible supplement here.

4.  STOP…

…touching your face…

…because your fingers are gross. On average, you touch your face 3.6 times an hour, which is a shame because the average hand carries 150 species of bacteria. Oh yes, we’re back to talking bacteria again, which has frankly seen better days (namely in the yogurt industry). Anyway, keep your hands away from your face, mmmk?

5.  WASH…

…your hands before applying skincare and makeup…

…for reasons outlined above (re: bacteria, dirt, and oil).

I learned a lot about germs and especially about cleaning my brushes. My brushes will get cleaned 2 times a month. You helped me understand how the skin can get irritated…don’t touch your skin! I will look for the cod liver oil.

Thank you. Just a little about me. I wrote a book about how I cured my rosacea. I found the root cause of rosacea, a horrible skin condition that doesn’t go away. I had it for two years. That’s how long it took me to find the cure. I am rosacea free!…no acne!

If you know anyone with this skin condition, please encourage them to read my book. I am in the process of creating a new website.

    Thanks
